Planning Yarn for Knitted Garments

One of the most common questions knitters face is “how much yarn do I need?” The answer depends on the garment type, size, yarn weight, and stitch pattern. Our garment sizing calculators use established yardage estimates to help you buy the right amount without waste.

A standard adult DK-weight pullover typically requires 1,200-1,800 metres of yarn depending on size, while a chunky-weight version may need only 600-900 metres. Socks in fingering weight use around 350-400 metres per pair, and a DK-weight hat needs approximately 100-150 metres. Our calculators refine these estimates based on your specific measurements.

When planning garments, ease is a crucial consideration. A fitted garment has 2-5cm of positive ease, a standard fit has 5-10cm, and an oversized fit has 10-15cm or more. Our calculators let you specify your ease preference to give accurate finished dimensions and yarn estimates.

For baby garments, sizing changes rapidly: a newborn garment typically fits for only 4-6 weeks, so many knitters size up. Standard UK baby sizes are newborn (45cm chest), 3 months (50cm), 6 months (55cm), 12 months (55cm), 18 months (58cm), and 24 months (60cm).
