Glove Size Calculator โ Stitch Counts and Yarn for Gloves
Calculate stitch counts, thumb gusset, and yarn requirements for gloves and mittens from hand measurements.
How We Calculate This
This calculator determines stitch counts for the hand, thumb gusset, and fingers from your hand measurements and gauge.
Key proportions
- Cast-on: Hand circumference x 0.9 (10% neg ease) x gauge, rounded to a multiple of 4
- Thumb gusset: ~25% of the cast-on stitches
- Finger proportions: Index 28%, middle 27%, ring 25%, pinky 20% of the cast-on
Frequently Asked Questions
Measure around the widest part of your hand (across the knuckles, excluding the thumb) for hand circumference. Measure from wrist to longest fingertip for hand length. For the thumb, measure circumference around the widest part (base joint).
Fingering weight gloves use approximately 200-300m per pair. DK weight gloves use 150-250m. Fingerless mitts use about 30% less. Mittens use slightly less than fingered gloves because there are no individual finger tubes. Always buy a full extra ball for safety.
Divide the total hand stitches by proportions: index finger ~28%, middle finger ~27%, ring finger ~25%, pinky ~20%. Add 2 gusset stitches between each finger for comfort and to prevent holes at the base of each finger.
Gloves should have 5-10% negative ease (cast on fewer stitches than exact circumference) for a snug fit. Knitted fabric stretches, so a slightly smaller glove will fit the hand perfectly. Too much ease creates baggy, uncomfortable gloves.
The thumb gusset starts several centimetres above the cuff and increases gradually over 15-20 rounds to create a triangular section of fabric. The thumb stitches (about 25% of the cast-on count) are then placed on waste yarn while the hand continues.

All calculations are estimates based on standard yarn weights and gauge. Results may vary with individual tension, yarn brand, and needle size.
