Scarf Calculator — Calculate yarn for scarves based on dimensions and stitch pattern
Calculate yarn for scarves based on dimensions and stitch pattern.
How We Calculate This
This calculator estimates yarn based on the scarf area and the yarn weight category.
The formula
Yarn grams = Width x Length x Grams per cm²
Yarn metres = Grams x Metres per gram
Frequently Asked Questions
A standard scarf is 15-25cm wide. Wider scarves (25-35cm) can double as wraps. Narrow scarves (10-15cm) are more modern and use less yarn.
A standard scarf is 150-180cm long (roughly your height). A shorter scarf (120cm) works for wrapping once. An infinity scarf/cowl is typically 60-80cm circumference.
A DK-weight scarf 20cm x 150cm uses roughly 350-460m (about 5 x 50g balls). An aran-weight scarf uses slightly less meterage but more grams. Chunky scarves knit up fast but use more yarn by weight.
