Vest Calculator — Yarn and Sizing for Knitted Vests
Calculate yarn requirements and stitch counts for sleeveless vests and tank tops.
How We Calculate This
This calculator estimates yarn for sleeveless vests based on chest circumference, length, and yarn weight. Vests use approximately 30-40% less yarn than equivalent sweaters.
The formula
- Body stitches: (Chest + ease) x stitch gauge
- Yarn area: Finished chest x length + 10% for shaping
- Yarn weight: Grams = fabric area x the area-density of your chosen yarn (a 10x10cm DK swatch weighs about 4-5g); metres are derived from grams using typical metres-per-gram for that weight
Because a vest has no sleeves, it typically uses about 30-40% less yarn than the same long-sleeved sweater. That is general context only — this calculator estimates the vest body directly from its own area, it does not compute a sweater and then discount it.
Frequently Asked Questions
A vest uses approximately 30-40% less yarn than a long-sleeved sweater of the same size. The savings come from not knitting sleeves. This makes vests ideal for expensive yarns or when you have limited yardage.
Bind off 3-5 stitches at each underarm, then decrease 1 stitch each side every other row 5-8 times. The total armhole should be about 20-24cm deep for an adult. Finish the armhole edges with a few rows of ribbing or an applied i-cord.
Close-fitting vests (layering pieces): 2-5cm ease. Standard fit: 5-10cm ease. Oversized or fashion vests: 10-20cm ease. Fitted vests look best over a shirt; oversized vests work as standalone pieces.
Yes, always. Unfinished armholes will curl in stocking stitch. Options include picking up stitches and knitting a few rounds of ribbing, working a single crochet edging, or applying an i-cord edge. The finish should be consistent with the neckline treatment.
Yes. Knit the body as written but stop at the armhole shaping. Shape armholes with bind-offs and decreases, then continue the front and back separately. Skip the sleeves entirely. Add armhole edging at the end. You will save the yarn for both sleeves.

All calculations are estimates based on standard yarn weights and gauge. Results may vary with individual tension, yarn brand, and needle size.
