Blanket Size Calculator — Calculate yarn and stitch counts for blankets and throws
Calculate yarn and stitch counts for blankets and throws.
How We Calculate This
This calculator estimates yarn from blanket area and yarn weight, and calculates cast-on stitches and rows from your gauge swatch.
The formula
Cast on = Width x (Stitch gauge / 10)
Total rows = Length x (Row gauge / 10)
Yarn = Area x Grams per cm² x Metres per gram
Row gauge is taken from your own swatch. Selecting a yarn weight sets a sensible default (DK ~28, Aran ~24, Chunky ~17, Super Bulky ~12 rows/10cm), which you can override, because row gauge — like stitch gauge — gets looser as the yarn gets thicker.
Frequently Asked Questions
Pram/crib: 70x90cm. Single/throw: 120x150cm. Double: 150x200cm. King: 200x230cm. Lap blanket: 90x120cm.
A throw (120x150cm) in aran weight uses approximately 1,250-1,450m. In chunky, roughly 1,200-1,350m. Super bulky: about 1,100-1,250m. Use the calculator above for your exact size and yarn weight — heavier yarns cover more area per metre, so a chunky or super-bulky throw generally needs fewer total metres than aran for the same blanket (though it weighs more in grams).
Aran and chunky are most popular for blankets. Aran gives good drape and a reasonable knitting time. Chunky knits faster. Super bulky makes dramatic but heavy blankets.

All calculations are estimates based on standard yarn weights and gauge. Results may vary with individual tension, yarn brand, and needle size.
