Sock Yarn Calculator โ Yarn for Socks by Shoe Size
Calculate how much yarn you need for socks based on shoe size, sock type, yarn weight, and gauge.
How We Calculate This
This calculator estimates sock yarn based on shoe size foot dimensions, sock type (ankle/crew/knee-high), and yarn weight. It applies negative ease for a proper fit.
The formula
Finished circumference = Foot circumference x (1 + ease%)
Sock length = Foot length + Leg length + Cuff length
Yarn (g) = Circumference x Length x 2 (pair) x Density factor
Yarn (m) = Grams x Metres per gram for yarn weight
Frequently Asked Questions
A standard pair of adult crew socks in fingering weight uses approximately 350-400 metres (about 100g). Ankle socks use 250-300 metres and knee-high socks need around 500-800 metres (roughly 110-180g) because of the longer, wider calf. Larger shoe sizes and heavier yarn weights need proportionally more.
Fingering weight (4-ply) is the most popular for socks because it creates a comfortable, durable fabric on 2.25-2.75mm needles. Sock yarn with nylon content (typically 75% wool, 25% nylon) is most hardwearing. Sport and DK weight make thicker, cosier socks.
Cuff-down is traditional and better for learning. Toe-up lets you try on as you go and use every last metre of yarn, which is ideal for playing yarn chicken or making knee-high socks. Both methods produce identical socks when finished.
Socks need negative ease (typically -10% to -15%) so they stretch to fit snugly around the foot. Without negative ease, socks would be baggy and uncomfortable. The knitted fabric stretches to accommodate the foot.

All calculations are estimates based on standard yarn weights and gauge. Results may vary with individual tension, yarn brand, and needle size.
