Crochet Calculations and Techniques

Crochet uses a single hook to create fabric from yarn, and the calculations differ from knitting in several important ways. Crochet stitches are generally taller than knitting stitches, use more yarn per unit area, and the gauge can vary significantly between stitch types.

Crochet gauge is measured the same way as knitting gauge: make a swatch, block it, and count stitches and rows per 10cm. However, different crochet stitches have very different heights. A double crochet (UK terminology) is roughly twice the height of a double crochet stitch, and a treble is taller still. Our stitch height calculator helps you estimate row counts when switching between stitch types.

Amigurumi, the Japanese art of crocheting small stuffed figures, uses tight tension and specific increase patterns to create smooth spheres and shapes. A basic sphere starts with a magic ring and increases by 6 stitches per round until the desired diameter, then decreases at the same rate. Our amigurumi calculator gives you the round-by-round stitch counts.

Granny squares are a beloved crochet motif. When planning a blanket from granny squares, you need to calculate how many squares fit the desired dimensions, how much yarn each square uses, and how much extra yarn you need for joining. Our granny square calculator handles all of these calculations based on your square size and blanket dimensions.
