Crochet Blanket Calculator — Yarn, Chain Count & Rows
Calculate yarn requirements, foundation chain count, and total rows for crochet blankets and throws.
How We Calculate This
This calculator estimates yarn for crochet blankets based on dimensions, gauge, and yarn weight. Crochet uses approximately 25% more yarn than knitting for the same area.
The formula
Chain count = Width (cm) x Stitch gauge per cm
Total rows = Length (cm) x Row gauge per cm
Yarn = Area x Grams per cm² x Crochet factor (1.25 default, adjustable) x Metres per gram
Frequently Asked Questions
A standard throw (120x150cm) in DK yarn uses approximately 1,500-2,000m. Crochet uses roughly 25% more yarn than knitting for the same area due to taller stitch structure. Chunky yarn blankets use fewer metres but more total weight.
Acrylic is popular for blankets due to washability and affordability. Cotton is excellent for baby blankets. Wool blends provide warmth. For machine washability, look for superwash wool or acrylic blends. Choose yarn rated for easy care.
Multiply your target width by your stitch gauge per cm. For DK yarn at 15 stitches per 10cm (1.5/cm) — a typical single-crochet gauge for DK (Craft Yarn Council band 12-17 sts/10cm) — a 120cm blanket needs about 180 chains plus turning chains. Always make a gauge swatch first.
Half treble (UK) / HDC (US) creates a dense, warm fabric. Treble (UK) / DC (US) works up faster but is more open. Granny stitch is a classic choice. Moss stitch creates beautiful texture. Choose based on desired drape and warmth.
A throw-sized blanket in DK typically takes 40-80 hours depending on stitch pattern and your speed. Chunky yarn blankets are much faster (20-40 hours). Working 1-2 hours per day, expect 1-3 months for a full blanket.

All calculations are estimates based on standard yarn weights and gauge. Results may vary with individual tension, yarn brand, and needle size.
