Oval Calculator โ Foundation Chain & Increases for Crochet Ovals
Calculate the foundation chain length and increase schedule for flat crochet ovals of any size.
How We Calculate This
A crochet oval combines a straight section with semicircular ends. This calculator works out the foundation chain and increase rounds.
The formula
Foundation chain = (Target length - Target width) x Stitch gauge per cm
Rounds = (Target width / 2) x Row gauge per cm
Final stitches = (Foundation chain x 2) + (Rounds x Increases per round)
Frequently Asked Questions
An oval starts with a foundation chain (the straight centre) and works around both sides with semicircular increases at each end. A circle starts from a single point. The foundation chain length determines the difference between the oval length and width.
The foundation chain equals the difference between the desired length and width. For a 30x20cm oval, the chain represents 10cm of straight length. Convert to stitches using your gauge.
Each end works like half a circle: dc/sc uses 3 increases per end per round (6 total per round). Taller stitches need more increases. The total increases per round equal those for a full circle of the same stitch type.
Curling usually means too few increases at the ends. Try adding 1-2 extra increases per end. Blocking the finished oval flat with pins or spray starch also helps. Very tight tension can contribute to curling.
Yes, crochet ovals are commonly used as bases for bags, baskets, shoe soles, and placemats. For sturdy items, use a smaller hook than recommended for your yarn to create a firm, dense fabric.

All calculations are estimates based on standard yarn weights and gauge. Results may vary with individual tension, yarn brand, and needle size.
