Crochet Border Calculator โ Stitches for Edging & Borders
Calculate the number of stitches needed for a crochet border or edging around a finished piece.
How We Calculate This
This calculator determines the stitch count needed for a crochet border by calculating stitches along each edge and adding corner stitches.
The formula
Width stitches = Width (cm) x Stitch gauge per cm (top & bottom)
Length stitches = Length (cm) x Row gauge per cm (sides)
Round 1 total = (Width sts x 2) + (Length sts x 2) + (Corner sts x 4 corners)
Corner stitches default to 3 per corner. Each subsequent round adds the "stitches added per extra round" value (default 8, i.e. 2 extra at each of the 4 corners) to keep the border flat.
Frequently Asked Questions
Along the top and bottom edges, use your stitch gauge to determine the number of stitches. Along the sides (row edges), pick up approximately 1 stitch per row for dc, or adjust for taller stitches. Add 3 stitches at each corner for a flat border.
Ruffling means too many stitches - try reducing the number along each edge or skipping stitches. Cupping means too few - add more stitches. Corners are the most common problem area: use 3 dc (UK) in each corner for a flat turn.
A single round of dc border on a throw-sized piece uses approximately 20-40m depending on size. Each additional round uses slightly more as the perimeter grows. Taller stitches use more yarn per round.
A simple dc (UK) / sc (US) border is easiest and most versatile. Work one stitch per stitch along the top/bottom, and one stitch per row along the sides. Add 3 stitches in each corner. This creates a neat, flat border.
It helps but is not essential. Blocking first ensures the edges are even and the piece lies flat. If the edges curl (common with stockinette in knitting), a crochet border can help flatten them, but blocking first gives a neater result.

All calculations are estimates based on standard yarn weights and gauge. Results may vary with individual tension, yarn brand, and needle size.
