Stitch Height Calculator โ Row Height by Crochet Stitch Type
Calculate row height and rows needed for different crochet stitch types based on your gauge.
How We Calculate This
This calculator uses your dc (UK) / sc (US) row height as a baseline, then applies standard height ratios for taller crochet stitches.
Stitch height ratios
- DC (UK) / SC (US): 1.0x (baseline)
- HTR (UK) / HDC (US): 1.5x
- TR (UK) / DC (US): 2.0x
- DTR (UK) / TR (US): 3.0x
- TRTR (UK) / DTR (US): 4.0x
Row height = DC row height x Stitch ratio
Rows needed = Target length / Row height
Frequently Asked Questions
Each stitch type has a different height. Using dc (UK) / sc (US) as the baseline: htr is approximately 1.5x as tall (50% taller), tr is 2x as tall, dtr is 3x as tall, and trtr is 4x as tall. These ratios are approximate and vary with individual tension, so measure your own gauge for accuracy.
Stitch height determines your row gauge and how quickly your work grows in length. Taller stitches mean fewer rows for the same length, which makes projects faster. However, taller stitches also create more open fabric.
Make a dc swatch of at least 10 rows. Measure the total height and divide by the number of rows. For example, 10 dc rows measuring 8cm means each dc row is 0.8cm tall. Use this as your baseline measurement.
Yes. Thicker yarn produces taller stitches. The height ratios between stitch types remain roughly the same, but absolute heights increase with yarn weight. Always measure your own gauge rather than relying on generic values.
For patterns that combine stitch types (e.g. a row of dc followed by a row of tr), calculate the height of each row type separately and add them together. This calculator helps you determine individual row heights for planning.

All calculations are estimates based on standard yarn weights and gauge. Results may vary with individual tension, yarn brand, and needle size.
