Why must my stitch count fit the pattern repeat?

If your total stitches are not a multiple of the pattern repeat (plus edge stitches), the pattern will be incomplete at the end of each row. This creates an uneven appearance and can make the fabric look asymmetrical.

Should I round up or down to the nearest repeat?

Round to whichever is closest to your target. If both are equidistant, round up for a slightly wider piece (you can block to the exact measurement) or round down for a slightly narrower piece. The calculator shows both options.

What counts as edge stitches?

Edge stitches are any stitches outside the main pattern repeat. These include selvedge stitches (typically 1-2 per side), centring stitches (to centre the pattern), and any extra stitches specified in the pattern instructions.
