This calculator spaces decreases evenly across a flat row using the centred method, so no decrease lands at the selvedge.
The formula
Segments = Number of decreases + 1
Stitches per segment = (Current stitches − decreases × decrease width) / Segments
Each decrease (k2tog consumes 2 stitches) is worked at the end of an interior segment, and any leftover stitches are split evenly between the leading and trailing segments. Working in the round? Use Current stitches / Number of decreases instead, since there is no edge to protect.
Frequently Asked Questions
For a flat row, divide the current stitch count by the number of decreases plus one, so the decreases sit inside that many segments and none falls at the very edge. For example, 120 stitches with 12 decreases gives 120 / 13 ≈ 9 stitches per segment, and any leftover stitches are split evenly between the two end segments. For paired decreases like k2tog, work the decrease at the end of each interior segment.
K2tog (knit 2 together) leans right and SSK (slip, slip, knit) leans left. For symmetrical shaping (like V-necks or sleeve caps), use SSK on the right side and k2tog on the left side. For evenly distributed decreases across a row, either works.
Common situations include transitioning from a body pattern to tighter ribbing, shaping a hat crown, reducing stitch count after a cable section, or adjusting stitch count between pattern sections.
