How We Calculate This
This calculator divides stitches by the number of increases to find even spacing.
The formula
Interval = Current stitches / Number of increases
Make-1 (M1) increases are worked from the bar between stitches, so they do not use up a stitch. The increases sit in the gaps between segments whose lengths add up to your full stitch count, with the two edge segments splitting one interval in half for a centred result. Any remainder is added by making that many gaps one stitch longer, spread evenly across the row.
Frequently Asked Questions
Divide the current stitch count by the number of increases to get the interval. For 100 stitches with 10 increases the interval is 10, worked as: knit 5, *make 1, knit 10* nine times, make 1, knit 5 — the half-interval edge stitches (5 + 5) are split symmetrically so the shaping stays centred. If the division leaves a remainder, make that many gaps one stitch longer and spread the longer gaps evenly across the row rather than bunching them at one end.
M1L (make 1 left) and M1R (make 1 right) are nearly invisible. KFB (knit front and back) is easier but creates a small bump. Yarn overs create deliberate holes for lace. Choose based on whether you want the increase to be visible or invisible.
Common situations include transitioning from ribbing to a wider body, shaping a hat crown from the brim, increasing across a yoke, and adjusting stitch count for a different pattern section.
