Cable Stitch Calculator — Width & Yarn Impact

Calculate how cables affect fabric width and yarn consumption.

How We Calculate This

Cables pull fabric narrower because stitches cross over each other. This calculator estimates the width reduction and the extra yarn consumption.

The formula

Width reduction = Cable area width x 25% (average cable contraction — a 4-st cable occupies ~3 stockinette sts; measured swatches give ~25-27%)

Cabled-area extra yarn = 15% (10-20% more than stockinette for the cabled portion)

Whole-project extra yarn = (Cable stitches / Total stitches) x 15% — the per-area figure weighted by how much of the fabric is cabled, so it is much smaller than 15%
