Fair Isle Calculator โ Stitch Counts & Colour Distribution
Calculate stitch counts and colour distribution for Fair Isle (stranded colourwork) patterns.
How We Calculate This
This calculator adjusts your stitch count to fit the Fair Isle pattern repeat and estimates colour distribution.
The formula
Adjusted stitches = Nearest multiple of pattern repeat
Colour 1 stitches = Adjusted stitches x Rows x Colour 1 %
Frequently Asked Questions
Traditional Fair Isle uses two colours per row, with colours changing throughout the pattern. While some patterns use more than two colours per row, two is standard for manageability. The total number of colours in the design can be many more, just not on the same row.
Floats (carried yarn on the back) should ideally be no longer than 5-7 stitches. Beyond that, they can snag when wearing the garment. For longer stretches of one colour, catch the carried yarn every 3-4 stitches by twisting it with the working yarn.
Yes, approximately 10-20% more overall. The float yarn on the back adds to total consumption. The exact amount depends on the pattern: designs with long floats use more yarn than designs with frequent colour changes.
