Wrap Calculator — Dimensions and Yarn for Wraps and Stoles
Calculate cast-on count, row count, and yarn requirements for rectangular, triangular, and crescent wraps.
How We Calculate This
This calculator determines the cast-on count, number of rows, and estimated yarn requirements for wraps, stoles, and shawls.
Shape adjustments
- Rectangular: Full width x length area
- Triangular: Half the rectangular area (increases from point to top)
- Crescent: Approximately 60% of rectangular area
Frequently Asked Questions
A standard rectangular wrap is 45-60cm wide and 150-180cm long. A generous stole is 30-40cm wide and 180-200cm long. Triangular shawls are typically 150-180cm along the top edge and 60-80cm deep at the centre point.
A rectangular wrap typically uses 800-1200m of yarn depending on size and gauge. Triangular wraps use roughly half as much as a rectangle of the same dimensions. Lace wraps use less yarn per area due to the open stitches.
A stole is narrower (25-40cm) and longer, worn draped over the shoulders. A wrap is wider (45-60cm) and meant to be wrapped around the body. A shawl is typically triangular or crescent-shaped and worn over the shoulders.
After a garter-tab cast-on of 3-9 stitches, increase 4 stitches on every right-side row — one inside each edge plus two at the centre (either side of a centre stitch). This top-down method grows the triangle from the nape down. Alternatively, cast on the full top edge and decrease to the point. The centre depth equals half the top edge width for the resulting right-angled (isosceles) triangle.
Lace or fingering weight yarns create lightweight, drapey wraps ideal for year-round wear. DK weight makes a warmer, cosier wrap. Bulky yarns create thick, heavy wraps that work well as blanket scarves but may be too heavy for draped wear.

All calculations are estimates based on standard yarn weights and gauge. Results may vary with individual tension, yarn brand, and needle size.
