Pattern Scaling Calculator — Scale to Different Gauge
Scale a knitting pattern up or down to a different gauge or yarn weight, adjusting all stitch and row counts.
How We Calculate This
This calculator converts stitch and row counts from one gauge to another using a simple ratio.
The formula
Scale factor = New gauge / Original gauge
New stitches = Original stitches x Scale factor
New rows = Original rows x (New row gauge / Original row gauge)
A tighter (higher) gauge has more stitches per 10cm, so it needs more stitches to keep the same width; a looser gauge needs fewer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Multiply each stitch count by (new gauge ÷ original gauge). For example, scaling from 22 sts/10cm to 18 sts/10cm: factor = 18/22 = 0.82, so a 100-stitch pattern becomes 82 stitches — fewer stitches, because the looser new gauge gives more width per stitch. A tighter (higher) new gauge would need more stitches to keep the same width.
Scaling works well for simple patterns. Complex patterns with cables, lace, or colourwork may need additional adjustments since the motif sizes change with gauge. You may need to add or remove pattern repeats rather than simply scaling.
Yes, if your row gauge also differs. Stitch gauge and row gauge may scale by different amounts. If only stitch gauge changes, scale stitches only and adjust row count to achieve the same length in cm.
After scaling, your new stitch count may not be a perfect multiple of the pattern repeat. Round to the nearest multiple of the repeat. This may slightly change the finished width.
Yes, this is one of the main uses. Calculate your gauge in the new yarn weight, then use this calculator to convert all stitch and row counts. Remember that the finished fabric will have a different drape and weight.

All calculations are estimates based on standard yarn weights and gauge. Results may vary with individual tension, yarn brand, and needle size.
