Multiple Sizing Calculator โ Stitch Counts for Multiple Sizes
Calculate stitch counts for multiple sizes from a single base size, evenly graded by measurement increment.
How We Calculate This
This calculator generates stitch counts for multiple sizes by applying your gauge to even measurement increments from a base size.
How it works
- Stitch increment: Size increment (cm) x gauge (sts/cm)
- Each size: Base stitches +/- (offset x stitch increment)
- Sizes are distributed evenly around the base size
Frequently Asked Questions
Start with a base size that fits correctly and has the right stitch count. Decide the measurement increment between sizes (commonly 5cm for adults). Multiply the increment by your gauge to find how many stitches to add or subtract per size. This calculator does it automatically.
For adult garments, 5cm (approximately 2 inches) between sizes is standard. Children's patterns often use 2-3cm increments. Plus sizes may use 5-10cm increments. The increment should match your target size range divided by the number of sizes.
Yes. When you change the body stitch count, you also need to adjust armhole depth, sleeve width, neckline width, and body length. Use the other pattern maths calculators to recalculate each measurement for each size.
Most published patterns include 5-8 sizes. For comprehensive sizing, 8-10 sizes covering a wide range is ideal. At minimum, include small, medium, and large. More sizes make the pattern accessible to more knitters.
After grading, round each size's stitch count to the nearest multiple of your pattern repeat (this tool rounds every size, including the base, when a repeat is set). This may mean sizes are not perfectly evenly spaced, but each size will hold a complete pattern. If your stitch pattern needs edge stitches outside the repeat (a "multiple of k plus n" pattern), or you are working a seamed flat piece, add those selvedge stitches on top after rounding. Note any adjustments in the pattern instructions.

All calculations are estimates based on standard yarn weights and gauge. Results may vary with individual tension, yarn brand, and needle size.
