Custom Pattern Calculator — Stitch and Row Counts for Custom Dimensions
Calculate stitch and row counts for any custom dimensions, with optional pattern repeat adjustment.
How We Calculate This
This calculator converts your desired dimensions into stitch and row counts, adjusting for pattern repeats and edge stitches.
The formulas
- Stitches: Width (cm) x Stitch gauge / 10
- Rows: Length (cm) x Row gauge / 10
- Pattern repeat adjustment: Round stitches to nearest multiple of repeat + edge stitches
Frequently Asked Questions
Multiply your desired width in cm by your stitch gauge per cm (gauge per 10cm divided by 10). For example, 40cm wide at 22 sts/10cm = 40 x 2.2 = 88 stitches. This calculator rounds to the nearest whole stitch.
Edge stitches (selvedge stitches) are extra stitches added at each side for seaming or a neat edge. Common choices are 1 stitch per side (2 total) for mattress stitch seaming, or 2 per side (4 total) for decorative edges. They sit outside the pattern repeat.
If your stitch pattern repeats over a set number of stitches (e.g., a 6-stitch cable), your total must be a multiple of that repeat plus any edge stitches. This ensures the pattern displays correctly without partial motifs at the edges.
Multiply your desired length in cm by your row gauge per cm. For example, 50cm long at 30 rows/10cm = 50 x 3 = 150 rows. If your pattern has a row repeat, round to the nearest multiple of that repeat.
This calculator works for rectangular pieces. For shaped pieces like sleeves or necklines, use this to calculate the starting dimensions, then use the shaping calculators to work out increases, decreases, and bind-offs for the shaped sections.

All calculations are estimates based on standard yarn weights and gauge. Results may vary with individual tension, yarn brand, and needle size.
