Ruching Calculator — Extra Stitches and Rows for Gathered Fabric
Calculate the extra stitches or rows needed to create ruched or gathered knitted fabric.
How We Calculate This
This calculator determines how many extra stitches or rows you need to create gathered or ruched fabric.
How ruching works
- Horizontal ruching: Cast on = finished stitches x gather ratio
- Vertical ruching: Rows = finished rows x gather ratio
- Extra yarn: Approximately (ratio - 1) x 100% more yarn for the ruched section
Frequently Asked Questions
Ruching creates gathered, ruffled fabric by knitting more stitches or rows than the finished dimensions require, then gathering the excess. The fabric is first knit flat at the expanded size, then decreased or gathered to create the three-dimensional texture.
A 1.5x ratio creates gentle gathers suitable for a slightly textured panel. A 2x ratio is the most common, creating noticeable but not excessive ruching. 2.5x to 3x creates deep, dramatic gathers ideal for ruffles, collars, and decorative trims.
Horizontal ruching gathers across the width: you cast on more stitches than the finished width needs, then gather. Vertical ruching gathers along the length: you knit more rows, then gather or fold the extra length. Both create a different look.
For horizontal ruching: knit the expanded width, then on a decrease row, k2tog or k3tog evenly across to reduce to the finished width. For vertical ruching: alternate sections of extra rows (gathered) with normal rows (flat) using increase and decrease rows.
Ruching uses extra yarn proportional to the gather ratio. A 2x ratio uses approximately twice the yarn for the ruched section. A 3x ratio uses approximately three times. Plan your yarn quantities based on the expanded dimensions, not the finished size.
