Pleat Calculator — Extra Stitches for Knitted Pleats
Calculate the additional stitches needed for knitted pleats of various types.
How We Calculate This
This calculator determines how many extra stitches you need to create pleats, based on the pleat type and finished width.
Pleat multipliers
- Knife pleat: 3x pleat width (face + 2 hidden layers)
- Box pleat: 3x pleat width (three layers over the visible width)
- Inverted box pleat: 3x pleat width (a reversed box pleat, same fabric)
- Accordion pleat: 2x pleat width for a shallow fold (a full-depth accordion needs ~3x)
Frequently Asked Questions
A knife pleat needs 3x the folded pleat width in stitches (face plus two hidden layers). A box pleat — and the identical inverted box pleat — also needs 3x its visible width: it is three layers thick over the width you see (front face, the fold behind, and the underlay between them). A shallow accordion pleat needs about 2x (a full-depth accordion needs about 3x). For example, a 2cm pleat that spans 5 stitches needs 15 stitches total (10 extra) whether it is a knife or a box pleat.
Knife pleats fold in one direction. Box pleats fold symmetrically outward from centre. Inverted box pleats fold inward. Accordion pleats alternate direction. Each creates a different look and uses different amounts of extra fabric.
Knit the full width including pleat fabric. On the fold row, fold the pleat and knit through all layers to join. Use stitch markers to mark fold lines. Some knitters prefer to fold and pin before joining.
Yes, significantly. A knife pleat uses about 3x the yarn for the pleated section because it creates 3 layers of fabric. A box pleat or inverted box pleat is also three layers thick over its visible width, so it too uses about 3x. A shallow accordion uses about 2x. Plan yarn quantities accordingly.
Pleats appear in skirts, kilts, cuffs, and decorative panels. A pleated skirt might have knife pleats all around. A kilt features box pleats at the back. Cuffs may use small accordion pleats for a gathered look.

All calculations are estimates based on standard yarn weights and gauge. Results may vary with individual tension, yarn brand, and needle size.
