This calculator divides shoulder stitches into equal groups for stepped shaping.
The formula
Stitches per group = floor(Shoulder stitches / Number of groups)
Any remainder stitches are added to the last group(s), nearest the neck, so the steepest part of the slope sits at the neck edge and the shallowest at the armhole.

Binding off all shoulder stitches at once creates a stair-step edge. Shaping in 3 or more groups creates a smoother, sloped shoulder line that is easier to seam and looks more professional.
Bind-off shaping creates small steps. Short-row shaping creates a smooth slope by turning the work progressively earlier. Short rows give a neater finish and work well for grafting or three-needle bind-off.
Three groups is standard for most garments. For very wide shoulders or fine-gauge knitting, four groups gives an even smoother line. Two groups is acceptable for chunky knits.
Yes, front and back shoulders should have the same number of stitches and the same shaping. The only difference is in the neckline: the front neck is deeper, so the front shoulders start shaping sooner.
