Neckline Calculator — Shaping for Round, V-Neck & Boat Neck
Calculate neckline shaping for round, V-neck, and boat neck styles based on your gauge and measurements.
How We Calculate This
This calculator converts neck measurements to stitch counts and generates a shaping schedule based on neck style.
The formulas
Neck stitches = Neck width (cm) x Stitch gauge per cm
Round neck: Centre bind-off = ~35% of neck stitches, with the side stitches removed as a stepped curve — tapering bind-offs at the base (e.g. bind off 3, then 2) followed by single decreases every other row.
V-neck: Side decreases = Half of neck stitches, spaced evenly on RS rows
Boat neck: All stitches bound off in one row
Frequently Asked Questions
A round neck binds off the centre 30-40% of neck stitches at once, then removes the remaining side stitches as a stepped curve. At each neck edge you bind off in tapering groups (for example bind off 3 sts, then 2 sts), then decrease 1 stitch every other row (every RS row). The fast bind-offs at the base absorb several stitches in just a few rows so the curve fits the neck depth — a flat one-decrease-every-row rate would give a straight diagonal, not a curve.
Standard crew/round neck: 7.5-9cm (3-3.5in) front depth, with the back neck about 2-2.5cm (1in) shallower. V-neck: 15-25cm from shoulder to point. Boat neck: 2-3cm. Scoop neck: 10-11.5cm. Measure from the shoulder join to where you want the neckline to sit.
The back neck is typically 2-3cm shallower than the front. For a round neck, the back may only need the centre stitches bound off with minimal side shaping. Short rows can also shape the back neck.
For a V-neck, divide the neck stitches in half (binding off 1 centre stitch if the count is odd) and decrease 1 stitch each side at regular intervals. V-neck decreases are worked on RS rows only, so use an even interval: if you have 20 stitches to lose per side over 60 rows, decrease every other row 20 times (40 rows), or every 4th row to spread them further. Start the V at the desired depth below the shoulder.
For a neckband, pick up approximately 1 stitch per bind-off stitch along the horizontal edge and 3 stitches for every 4 rows along shaped edges. The total should give a smooth, non-puckered neckband.
