Row Time Calculator — Time per Row Estimate
Estimate the time each row takes based on stitch count and your knitting speed.
How We Calculate This
This calculator estimates how long each row takes and how many rows you can complete per hour.
The formula
- Time per row: (stitches per row / stitches per minute) x complexity factor
- Rows per hour: (60 - break time) / minutes per row
- Rows per session: (session length - pro-rated break) / minutes per row
- Total time: minutes per row x total rows
The complexity factor (1 for plain knitting, ~1.5 for cables, ~2 for colourwork) accounts for slower stitches in patterned rows. Break time is per session hour, so “rows per hour” stays a true 60-minute rate; the optional session length drives a separate “rows per session” figure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Knowing your time per row helps plan knitting sessions. If each row takes 5 minutes, you know you can complete 12 rows in an hour. This helps you set realistic goals like finishing 10 rows during an episode of television, or knowing how many sessions you need.
Yes. Rows with shaping (increases, decreases) take longer than plain rows. Pattern rows with cables or colourwork are slower. The beginning of a project is often slower as you settle in. You may also slow down when tired or speed up as you become familiar with the pattern.
Use a row counter (mechanical or app-based). Count the V shapes in stocking stitch or the ridges in garter stitch. Mark every 10 rows with a locking stitch marker or contrasting yarn. Many knitters use the Knit Companion or Row Counter apps.
Row length (stitch count), pattern complexity, yarn type (slippery silk is slower than smooth wool), needle material (bamboo grips more than metal), your experience level, and whether you are reading a chart or have memorised the pattern all affect speed.
Calculate your rows per hour, then decide how many rows you want to complete per session. Set a timer or row target rather than a time target. Breaking a project into milestones (waist to armhole, armhole to shoulder) makes large projects feel manageable.
