Deadline Calculator — Daily Knitting Pace for Deadlines
Calculate how many rows per day you need to knit to finish a project by a specific deadline.
How We Calculate This
This calculator determines your required daily knitting pace to meet a project deadline based on remaining work and available time.
The formula
- Rows remaining: Total rows - rows completed
- Rows per day: Rows remaining / days until deadline
- Time per day: Rows per day x (stitches per row / speed)
Frequently Asked Questions
Subtract rows completed from total rows to get rows remaining. Divide by days until deadline. This gives you your required daily row count. Multiply by minutes per row (from your speed and stitch count) to get daily time commitment.
This depends on row length and your available time. For a 100-stitch row at 30 sts/min, each row takes about 3.3 minutes. At 2 hours of knitting, you can complete about 36 rows. For a 200-stitch row, the same time gives about 18 rows. Be realistic about your available time.
Yes. If your deadline is 30 days away, plan for 25 knitting days to allow for days when you cannot knit. Increase your daily row target to compensate. This also provides buffer for mistakes and ripping back. Burnout from forced daily knitting can ruin the enjoyment.
Options include: knitting during commutes or lunch breaks, switching to a simpler stitch pattern for faster sections, asking a knitting friend to help with seaming, or adjusting the project scope. For gifts, a smaller item in the same yarn is better than an unfinished larger one.
Add 1-3 days for seaming, weaving in ends, and blocking. For a full sweater, allow 4-6 hours of finishing plus 24-48 hours of blocking/drying time. Subtract these from your available days before calculating your daily knitting pace.
