Most experienced knitters work at 20-30 stitches per minute for stockinette. Continental knitters tend to be faster than English/throwing style, and fast lever knitters can reach 60+ stitches per minute. Complex patterns (cables, colourwork, lace) slow you down by 20-50%. Beginners may be closer to 10-15 stitches per minute.

Try Continental or Portuguese knitting styles. Use circular needles to avoid turning. Minimise unnecessary yarn movement. Practice consistent tension. Choose simpler stitch patterns. Avoid putting your knitting down mid-row. Some knitters find that listening to podcasts helps maintain a steady rhythm.

Allow 1-2 hours for swatching and casting on, plus 2-4 hours for finishing (weaving in ends, seaming, blocking). Complex garments with many pieces may need 5+ hours of finishing. This calculator adds a default 2 hours if you do not specify.

Setting a row or time target helps maintain momentum. Even 30 minutes a day adds up — that is 3.5 hours per week, enough to complete a scarf in 1-2 weeks. For gift deadlines, calculate backwards from the due date to find your minimum daily requirement.
