Understanding Yarn Weights and Yardage
Yarn is the foundation of every knitting and crochet project. Getting the right amount is essential to avoid running out mid-project or overspending on excess skeins. Our yarn calculators help you plan accurately whether you are buying yarn for the first time or substituting from your stash.
Yarn weight refers to the thickness of the yarn strand, not how heavy it is. The standard weight categories range from lace (0) through fingering/4-ply, sport/5-ply, DK/8-ply, worsted/aran/10-ply, chunky/12-ply, to super bulky. In the UK, the most commonly used weights are 4-ply, DK, and aran. Each weight has a recommended needle size range and expected gauge.
When substituting yarns, matching the gauge is more important than matching the weight category label. A loose DK yarn may knit to the same gauge as a tight aran on smaller needles. Always swatch with the substitute yarn and adjust needle size to match the pattern gauge. Our yarn substitution calculator helps you work out how many balls of the new yarn you need based on the difference in meterage per ball.
Yarn is sold by weight (typically 25g, 50g, or 100g balls), but the meterage varies significantly between fibres and weights. A 100g ball of lace weight may contain 800m, while a 100g ball of chunky has only 100m. Our cost per metre calculator lets you compare value accurately across different yarns and brands.
