Yarn Cost Per Metre Calculator — Compare Yarn Value
Compare the cost per metre of different yarns to find the best value. Price per ball alone does not tell the full story.

How We Calculate This
This calculator divides the ball price by the meterage to give cost per metre for two yarns side by side.
The formula
Cost per metre = Price per ball / Metres per ball
Cost per gram = Price per ball / Weight per ball
Frequently Asked Questions
Balls come in different weights (25g, 50g, 100g) and different meterage. A £5 ball with 210m of yarn is actually cheaper than a £4 ball with 100m of yarn. Cost per metre is the only fair comparison that accounts for both price and quantity.
Not necessarily. Some budget yarns like Stylecraft Special DK are excellent quality and great value. However, very cheap acrylics may pill more quickly and feel less pleasant to knit with than mid-range wools or blends. Consider durability and feel alongside price.
A DK-weight pullover using mid-range yarn costs roughly £30-60 in the UK. A pair of fingering-weight socks costs £8-15. A chunky blanket might cost £40-100. Luxury yarns like cashmere or hand-dyed artisan yarns can increase these costs by 3-5 times.
