Stitch Pattern Repeat Calculator โ Fit Repeats to Width
Adjust your stitch count to fit a pattern repeat perfectly, with edge stitches accounted for.
How We Calculate This
This calculator finds the nearest total stitch count that accommodates your pattern repeat plus edge stitches.
The formula
Pattern stitches = Target stitches - Edge stitches - Centre stitches
Repeats = Pattern stitches / Repeat size (rounded to the nearer of the two whole-repeat options; ties round up for the slightly wider piece)
Adjusted total = (Repeats x Repeat size) + Edge stitches + Centre stitches
Edge stitches (selvedge/balancing) and any centre stitches sit outside the repeat, so they are added once after the whole repeats are counted. Centre stitches default to 0.
Frequently Asked Questions
If your total stitches are not a multiple of the pattern repeat (plus edge stitches), the pattern will be incomplete at the end of each row. This creates an uneven appearance and can make the fabric look asymmetrical.
Round to whichever whole number of repeats lands closest to your target. The calculator recommends that option; if the two are exactly equidistant it rounds up for a slightly wider piece (you can block to the exact measurement). Both the nearest smaller and nearest larger options are always shown, so you can choose the narrower one if you prefer.
Edge stitches are any stitches outside the main pattern repeat. These include selvedge stitches (typically 1-2 per side), centring stitches (to centre the pattern), and any extra stitches specified in the pattern instructions.
