This calculator uses your row gauge to determine how many rows to knit for a target length.
The formula
Rows per cm = Row gauge / swatch width (cm)
Row gauge is normally quoted per 10cm (4in) swatch — the Craft Yarn Council convention — so the default swatch width is 10cm. If you measured your gauge over a different width, set it under Advanced Options and the divisor changes to match.
Total rows = Target length (cm) x Rows per cm (rounded up)

Row gauge determines how many rows you need to knit to reach a specific length. If your row gauge differs from the pattern, you will need to adjust the number of rows for sleeves, body length, and yoke depth. Row gauge matters most for shaped garments where rows determine the length of shaped sections.
Unlike stitch gauge, row gauge is harder to adjust because changing needle size affects both stitch and row gauge. If your stitch gauge matches but row gauge differs, you can usually just work more or fewer rows to reach the correct length. Many modern patterns give measurements rather than row counts for this reason.
In stockinette stitch, each V-shaped stitch on the right side represents one row. In garter stitch, each ridge represents two rows. Turn your work sideways and count the V's or ridges in a measured section. For ribbing, count on a column of knit stitches.
