Pom Pom Calculator — Yarn for Pom Poms

Calculate yarn needed to make pom poms of various sizes.

How We Calculate This

This calculator estimates yarn based on the pom pom diameter and the number of wraps needed for a full pom.

The formula

Yarn per pom (m) = 0.18 x Density x Diameter^2.5 (Density = 1.0 by default)

Wraps ≈ (Yarn x 100) / (π x Diameter / 2) (shown for reference)

These are rough heuristics, not exact rules. The estimate is most reliable for medium pom poms (about 5-10cm) and assumes DK-weight yarn at medium density. A pom pom is essentially a small sphere, so real yarn use rises steeply with diameter — very small poms may need a little less and large poms noticeably more than a simple scaling suggests. Thicker or thinner yarn and how densely you wrap will materially change the result, so treat the figure as a buying guide and wrap generously.

All calculations are estimates based on standard yarn weights and gauge. Results may vary with individual tension, yarn brand, and needle size.
