Pom Pom Calculator — Yarn for Pom Poms
Calculate yarn needed to make pom poms of various sizes.
How We Calculate This
This calculator estimates yarn based on the pom pom diameter and the number of wraps needed for a full pom.
The formula
Yarn per pom (m) = 0.18 x Density x Diameter^2.5 (Density = 1.0 by default)
Wraps ≈ (Yarn x 100) / (π x Diameter / 2) (shown for reference)
These are rough heuristics, not exact rules. The estimate is most reliable for medium pom poms (about 5-10cm) and assumes DK-weight yarn at medium density. A pom pom is essentially a small sphere, so real yarn use rises steeply with diameter — very small poms may need a little less and large poms noticeably more than a simple scaling suggests. Thicker or thinner yarn and how densely you wrap will materially change the result, so treat the figure as a buying guide and wrap generously.
Frequently Asked Questions
For medium-density DK yarn, a 5cm pom pom uses roughly 10m, a 6cm pom around 16m, an 8cm pom about 33m, and a 10cm pom about 57m. Yarn use rises steeply with size because a pom pom is a small sphere (the estimate scales as diameter^2.5). Thinner yarn and denser wrapping increase usage further, so wrap generously for a full, dense pom pom.
More wraps = fuller pom pom. Wrap until the centre hole is nearly full. Trim evenly after tying. Using a slightly thicker yarn or wrapping more loosely also adds volume.
For hats, 6-8cm pom poms are popular. For scarves, 4-6cm works well. For baby items, 3-4cm. For blanket corners, 5-8cm. Choose a pom pom maker slightly larger than desired as trimming reduces the size.
Yes. Wrap yarn around cardboard circles, a fork (for small poms), or your fingers. Cut along the outer edge, tie tightly through the centre, and trim to shape. Cardboard templates work just as well as commercial makers.
Thread the long tails from tying through to the inside of the hat or garment using a tapestry needle. Tie the tails to the inside stitches. For extra security, sew through the pom pom centre and back several times.

All calculations are estimates based on standard yarn weights and gauge. Results may vary with individual tension, yarn brand, and needle size.
