Blocking Measurements Calculator — Target Dimensions After Blocking

Calculate whether your target blocked dimensions are achievable based on fibre type and current measurements.

How We Calculate This

This calculator compares your current dimensions to target dimensions and checks whether the change is feasible for your fibre type.

Typical stretch limits by fibre

These are conservative, typical figures — your yarn may differ, so swatch, block and measure to find its real stretch factor.

  • Wool: up to 15%
  • Alpaca: up to 10% (stretches easily but does not spring back)
  • Silk: up to 8% safe target (can physically grow ~20% but has no memory and will sag if hung wet)
  • Cotton: up to 5%
  • Acrylic: up to 3% (springs back; steam-“killing” sets the shape permanently)
  • Linen: up to 3%
