DK Equivalent Yarn Calculator — Yarn Weight Substitution
Calculate adjustments when substituting one yarn weight for another in a knitting pattern.
How We Calculate This
This calculator compares the gauge of your pattern yarn against your substitute yarn and calculates the adjustments needed for stitch counts, rows, needle size and yarn quantity.
The formula
Finished width = stitches ÷ gauge, so to keep the same width you scale the stitch count by the gauge ratio of the substitute yarn to the pattern yarn.
Stitch adjustment = (Available gauge ÷ Pattern gauge - 1) × 100%
Row adjustment = (Available gauge ÷ Pattern gauge - 1) × 100%
Yarn quantity change = (Available gauge ÷ Pattern gauge - 1) × 100%
Example: a DK pattern at 22 sts/10cm worked in Aran at 18 sts/10cm needs (18 ÷ 22 - 1) × 100 = -18% stitches (100 sts → 82 sts). Yarn-quantity change is a rough metres estimate from the linear gauge; for a precise figure compare grist (metres per 100g) of the two yarns.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, but you need to adjust stitch counts, row counts and needle size. The key is to match the fabric density and drape. Knit a tension square with the substitute yarn and compare it to the pattern gauge. The finished garment will use different total yardage.
Multiply the pattern stitch count by the ratio of your gauge to the pattern gauge. For example, if the pattern calls for 100 stitches at 22 sts/10cm and your yarn knits at 18 sts/10cm, you need 100 x 18/22 = 82 stitches to achieve the same width.
No. A heavier yarn creates a thicker, less drapey fabric. A lighter yarn creates a thinner, more fluid fabric. The stitch definition and texture will also differ. Cable patterns look better in smoother, heavier yarns. Lace opens up more in finer yarns.
Heavier yarns use more yarn by weight but fewer metres. Lighter yarns use less weight but more metres. When substituting, always compare total metres (not grams) to determine how many balls you need.

All calculations are estimates based on standard yarn weights and gauge. Results may vary with individual tension, yarn brand, and needle size.
